abstract = {We developed an Android phone unlock mechanism utilizing facial recognition and specific mimics to access a specially secured portion of the device, designed for plausible deniability. The widespread adoption of biometric authentication methods, such as fingerprint and facial recognition, has revolutionized mobile device security, offering enhanced protection against shoulder-surfing attacks and improving user convenience compared to traditional passwords. However, a downside is the potential for third-party coercion to unlock the device. While text-based authentication allows users to reveal a hidden system by entering a special password, this is challenging with face authentication. We evaluated our approach in a role-playing user study involving 50 participants, with one participant acting as the attacker and the other as the suspect. Suspects successfully accessed the secured area, mostly without detection. They further expressed interest in this feature on their personal phones. We also discuss open challenges and opportunities in implementing such authentication mechanisms.},

abstract = {The proliferation of mobile Virtual Reality (VR) headsets shifts our interaction with virtual worlds beyond our living rooms into shared spaces. Consequently, we are entrusting more and more personal data to these devices, calling for strong security measures and authentication. However, the standard authentication method of such devices - entering PINs via virtual keyboards - is vulnerable to shoulder-surfing, as movements to enter keys can be monitored by an unnoticed observer. To address this, we evaluated masking techniques to obscure VR users' input during PIN authentication by diverting their hand movements. Through two experimental studies, we demonstrate that these methods increase users' security against shoulder-surfing attacks from observers without excessively impacting their experience and performance. With these discoveries, we aim to enhance the security of future VR authentication without disrupting the virtual experience or necessitating additional hardware or training of users.},

abstract = {Bio-based and bio-degradable materials have shown promising results for sustainable Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) applications, including shape-changing interfaces. However, the diversity of shape-changing behaviors achievable with these materials remains unclear as the fabrication knowledge is scattered across multiple research fields. This paper introduces SoftBioMorph, a fabrication framework that aims to integrate the fabrication know-how of sustainable soft shape-changing interfaces with biopolymers. Based on the example of Sodium Alginate, the framework contributes (1) a set of material synthesis processes that modify the biopolymer’s properties to fulfill different functions; (2) a set of DIY crafting-based assembling techniques that functionalize the material and assembling properties to achieve three primitive types of change in shape; and (3) a series of application cases that demonstrate the versatility of the framework. We further discuss limitations, research questions, and fabrication challenges, presenting a comprehensive approach to sustainable prototyping in HCI.},

abstract = {Innovative technologies often have unforeseen negative consequences on an individual, societal, or environmental level. To minimize these, the Cassandra method aims to foresee such negative effects by systematically investigating dystopian visions. Starting with the activation of a (self-)critical mindset, the next steps are collecting a maximum number of negative effects and assessing their relevance. Finally, the envisioned impairments are used to improve the product concepts in a responsible way. This paper broadly outlines the method, its applications during product development and research, and reports on experiences from an expert workshop.},

abstract = {Our interactions with technology do not just shape our individual experiences. They also affect people around us. Although previous research has addressed such "witness" experiences, the actual effect of interaction design on the witness experience remains largely unknown. In an online study (n = 407), we explored how witnesses perceive mid-air gesture-based interactions with a hearing aid, using four video vignettes. We studied witnesses' subjective visibility of manipulations and effects (following Reeves and colleagues' taxonomy), perceived form of interaction, subjective experience, and relationships between these measures. Although visibility patterns matched the intended form, they did not lead to the supposed experience (i.e., "suspenseful" gestures did not lead to suspenseful experiences). The paper illustrates gaps in current research about witness experiences, demonstrates the need to overcome basic hiding/revealing profiles, and indicates a path forward by focusing on aesthetic forms and experiences.},

abstract = {Conducting gesture elicitation studies (GES) in personal spaces such as smart homes is crucial to achieving high ecological validity of elicited gestures. However, supervising such studies is considered intrusive and negatively affects the results' quality. The alternative is to conduct unsupervised GES under similar conditions, but more side-by-side comparisons documenting the similarities and differences between both approaches are necessary. Consequently, we need more data describing the preferred approach and whether the differences or similarities in the results are so significant to cause concern. This research distributed a DIY observation kit, which 30 participants assembled and used to propose gestures for controlling elements in a smart living room using a pillow's surface, with and without supervision. Our results show that gestures from supervised and unsupervised studies differ in quantity and max-consensus but not in gesture Agreement Scores. Our results also show that participants preferred conducting unsupervised studies but proposed fewer gesture sets in this condition.},
