However, many of these interfaces are designed without sufficient consideration of users\u2019 everyday habits, preferences, and physical abilities. This often results in interactions that feel disconnected from users\u2019 actual needs and goals. One promising alternative is to embed control interfaces into familiar objects and surfaces, building on the natural interactions people have developed with their environments over time.<\/p><p>In this dissertation, we design alternative user interfaces (UI) embedded in everyday objects to ease the shortcomings of current interaction approaches, particularly in the home. As part of our design explorations, we first identified candidate objects, devices, and domestic spaces that could serve as hosts for embedded interfaces. In parallel, we developed remote observation tools and gesture elicitation protocols to better understand user behaviour both in situ and in lab settings. These tools were essential for our requirements-gathering process, enabling us to link specific objects to devices and to collect functional and non-functional requirements for the interfaces. This process combined Gesture and Photo Elicitation Studies with Wizard of Oz techniques for early validation.<\/p><p>Once the requirements were confirmed, we fabricated prototypes that reflected our interaction designs. We then evaluated these prototypes in a controlled lab study, focusing on user experience and exploring how participants perceived the functionality and design of the interfaces. This iterative approach helped us to document the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating interactivity into everyday domestic objects.<\/p><p>Our findings indicate that alternative interfaces can be realised by exploiting the secondary affordances of everyday objects (i.e. physical attributes that accommodate control interfaces without disrupting primary functions). However, for these interfaces to function effectively as alternative UIs, designers must consider their contextual and physical attributes while carefully navigating design trade-offs that impact the user experience (UX). Key considerations in this regard include ensuring intuitive mappings between gestures and functions, using multimodal feedback appropriately, and preserving the object\u2019s original purpose.<\/p><p>Further results also show that some interfaces embedded in everyday objects are scalable, allowing a single object to control multiple devices. From the simple joy of completing a level or the sense of achievement by overcoming a tough challenge to the emotional bonds players form to virtual characters when being enthralled in a captivating narrative, the spectrum of emotional responses stemming from playing games is wide. In addition to linear games, that focus on progression systems such as completing levels, advancing a story, or upgrading a virtual character, open-ended games offer emergent gameplay. These games define specific rules and mechanics but do not restrict the player to reach a distinct end goal in a certain way. They allow players to explore the game\u2019s content in a curious and free way. Game genres associated with such openness are sandbox games and city-builders that give players the means for playful creative self-expression. Using the toolsets the games provide, players create and shape worlds, they form the very terrain of these worlds by creating hills, valleys, rivers, and canyons. Moreover, players can embellish these worlds with urban structures like roads or buildings. These games stimulate creativity and create a sense of playfulness that lets players approach in-game challenges in curious and novel ways. Besides the entertainment industry, the benefits of playing games for serious purposes have been recognized and examined by human-computer interaction (HCI) research for decades. Since games have the capability to satisfy emotional needs, they have been investigated regarding their potential to support learning, behavior change, motivation to exercise, and many other applications beyond entertainment. One such domain is psychotherapy. Specifically for the treatment of phobias, studies suggest that the inclusion of video games can be beneficial to the course of therapy. These games usually incorporate concepts from the domains of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure therapy (ET), the most common treatment technique for simple phobias. By gamification of these techniques or the implementation of serious games, motivation to seek therapy can be increased, giving more people access to professional mental health interventions. In this thesis, I examine the interplay of games that allow creative self-expression and psychotherapy for the treatment of phobias. The work reported here is composed of three distinct domains of examination that illuminate different aspects of this approach. First, based on requirement analysis and in-the-field evaluations with industry experts from the domains of animation, film, and theater, the thesis investigates the use of natural user interfaces (NUIs) to support professionals with low technical expertise but highly technical tasks in their everyday lives. Thus, I demonstrate how NUIs may support therapists in the configuration, maintenance, and usage of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) systems. The second domain is concerned with the definition of a game design strategy suitable for the treatment of phobias. In the course of this thesis, I argue that game design for the treatment of phobias needs to consider specific requirements that have not been covered by previous research in this field. Based on these requirements that have been identified with therapy practitioners, this thesis introduces a novel concept - playful user-generated treatment (PUT), that incorporates these requirements for an applicable addition to therapy. An evaluation in the form of a user study and an expert survey demonstrate opportunities and challenges that PUT involves. The third and last research topic is concerned with the inclusion of procedural content generation (PCG) into the PUT concept as a way to alleviate technical complexity and foster human-computer co-creation. This segment covers the impact of PCG on self-reported creativity support and user engagement in a playful city-building task as defined in the PUT concept. Based on the work reported in this thesis, these key insights have been found. For the design of systems that are to be used by users with high technical demands and low technical expertise such as therapists and patients in a VRET context, NUIs can serve as tools to alleviate technical complexity whilst providing the benefits of novel technology. Furthermore, when implementing playful VRET systems, specific requirements need to be considered in the design process so as to not interfere with therapeutic success. The proposed PUT game design strategy fulfills these requirements and can be used to harness the positive effects of playful creative self-expression in a VRET scenario. Lastly, results from this thesis demonstrate that the inclusion of PCG into a PUT-based system does not interfere with self-reported creativity support. The shift plan provides a frame for all further healthcare activities by regulating staffing levels and group compositions at all times and on each day of the week. In addition, it fundamentally shapes each individual nurse\u2019s life, often disturbs their circadian rhythms, and limits their ability to organize social activities. As a result, shift planning often brings challenges for nurses&#039; physical and psychological health, and it can reduce their subjective well-being. There is a long history of research on how to improve the shift planning process, with two contrasting approaches. The first approach focuses on efficiency and full automation of the shift planning process. Its central motivation is that more efficient shift planning may free time and resources that can be used for other healthcare tasks, and that it helps to optimize staffing levels to meet the demand. A downside is that it excludes nurses from the planning process and reduces direct control of their shift plans, which creates work-life conflicts that negatively affect their well-being. The second approach gives full control of the shift plan to the nurses. This allows them to better integrate their work and private lives, but it can be inefficient and substantially increase workload for nurses, particularly in larger groups. This thesis presents the design and evaluation of an approach to shift planning that attempts to combine the best of both worlds, but with a focus on the nurses&#039; perspective. The research followed a nurse-centered design process, focusing specifically on subjective fairness and subjective well-being from the perspective of the nurses affected by shift planning. In addition, automatic processes were included if they did not interfere with the primary goal to create a shift planning system that promotes nurses&#039; fairness and well-being. The empirical section covers five studies. In Studies 1 and 2, we investigated nurses&#039; subjective fairness experiences in the context of shift planning. Nurses understood fairness as equality (\u201ceveryone is treated equally\u201d) for the general distribution of resources, such as free weekends. But in concrete planning decisions about free shifts, they understood fairness based on individual needs (\u201cthe person with a greater need gets the day off\u201d), which has fundamental implications for how fair conflict resolution should be designed. In addition, nurses experienced involvement in the decision-making process as a central facet of fairness (i.e., procedural fairness). Study 3 covers the conceptual design of a nurse-centered shift planning system with the goal to promote subjective fairness and subjective well-being, based on interview studies with nurses and healthcare planners. Study 4 describes a nine-month appropriation study of a prototypical shift planning system that followed this conceptual design, in a ward of a retirement community. We found that some nurses used the system regularly for planning, but others did not. These differences were partially based on different lifestyles (e.g., planning months ahead vs. not planning the next week) and social considerations (e.g., preserving the reputation as a reliable and hard-working colleague). We also identified informal conflict negotiation practices (e.g., rescheduling private events, sharing shifts), informal functions of leadership (e.g., \u201cpushing\u201d colleagues to take time for themselves), and implications of the shift plan&#039;s release date on nurses&#039; ability to plan for their private lives. Finally, in Study 5 we compared the informal conflict negotiation practices identified in Study 4 with an alternative, fully automated conflict resolution process. Through haptic feedback, visual representations gain tangibility, which has been shown to positively influence task performance, realism, and a user&#039;s sense of presence. While previous work has explored a plethora of approaches to provide haptic feedback in immersive virtual environments (IVEs), developing effective and convincing tactile experiences still remains challenging. Reasons for this are manifold and include the high complexity of the haptic sense, an unfamiliarity with the domain of haptics in other fields, a high diversity of haptic interfaces, and a lack of understanding of the need for including the user&#039;s sense of touch. Our research contributes to the fields of VR and haptic design by investigating how real-world touch experiences can enhance the design of effective tactile experiences in IVEs. We propose different approaches that are aimed at creating experiences such that users would be able to receive an impression of the intended feedback during visuo-haptic exploration. Firstly, we investigate haptic reproduction through capturing and fabricating surface microgeometry. We show that fabrication processes can support the design of touch experiences inspired by real-world haptic information. Furthermore, we build upon procedural haptic design by generating and fabricating haptically-varying surface structures. We show that digital design processes are able to generate flexible and universal structures that directly influence tactile dimensions, such as roughness and hardness. By utilizing such structures in visuo-haptic settings, the range of material perception can be extended. Lastly, we investigate correspondences between different sensory modalities to enhance the design of tactile experiences. We show that correspondences between visual and haptic modalities are able to support a wide gamut of material and texture perception in IVEs. Moreover, we show that vocalizations can be used to transfer design intent into effective haptic experiences, while providing a rapid in-situ design process. The goal of this thesis is to tackle the central drawback of this approach, namely, its inflexibility, which yet hinders it to fulfill the vision of the ultimate display. Guided by four research questions, we first showcase the applicability of proxy-based VR haptics by employing the technique for data exploration. We then extend the VR system&#039;s control over users&#039; haptic impressions in three steps. First, we contribute the class of Dynamic Passive Haptic Feedback (DPHF) alongside two novel concepts for conveying kinesthetic properties, like virtual weight and shape, through weight-shifting and drag-changing proxies. Conceptually orthogonal to this, we study how visual-haptic illusions can be leveraged to unnoticeably redirect the user&#039;s hand when reaching towards props. People have conversations with their smart voice assistants and social robots assist with the household or even look after their users\u2019 mental and physical health. Thus, the human-technology relationship often resembles interpersonal relationships in several ways. While research has implied that the human-technology relationship can adopt a social character, it needs to be clarified in what ways and regarding which variables the human-technology relationship and interpersonal relationships are comparable. Moreover, the question arises to what extent interaction with technology can address users\u2019 social needs similar to a human counterpart and therefore possibly even affect interpersonal interaction. In this, the role of technology anthropomorphism, that is, the attribution of humanlike qualities to non-human agents or objects needs to be specified. This thesis is dedicated to the relevance of the human-technology relationship for interpersonal relationships with a focus on social needs. In the frame of this overarching research aim, the studies included in this thesis focus on the dynamics of the human-technology relationship and their comparability to interpersonal relationships (RQ1), the potential of human-technology interaction to address users\u2019 social needs or substitute their fulfillment through interpersonal interaction (RQ2) as well as the role of technology anthropomorphism regarding these relationships (RQ3). First, focusing on trust, which is integral for the relationship with a technology that is experienced as a counterpart, two consecutive experimental studies (study 1.1\/1.2) were conducted. Based on a human-robot interaction, they explored trust development in the human-technology relationship as well as to what extent determinants known to affect interpersonal trust development are transferable. Moreover, they focused on the role of technology anthropomorphism in this relationship. In this, a positive effect of technology competence, that is, its ability to achieve intended goals (study 1.1), as well as technology warmth, that is, its adherence to the same intentions and interests as the trustor (study 1.2), on trust in the technology emerged. Thus, relevant determinants for trust development in the human-technology relationship were highlighted, also implying a transferability of essential dynamics of trust development from interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, perceived technology anthropomorphism appeared to affect the positive interrelation of perceived technology competence and trust in the technology (study 1.1) as well as the interrelation of perceived technology warmth and trust in the technology (study 1.2). These insights support a relevance of perceived technology anthropomorphism in trust dynamics within the human-technology relationship, but also in the transferability of corresponding dynamics from interpersonal relationships. Similarly, in another study (study 2) the transferability of dynamics was explored for the variable of social connectedness, also key for relationship development and potentially relevant for the effect of interaction with technology on users\u2019 social needs. Therefore, a two-week human-technology interaction with a conversational chatbot was investigated. In this, possibly relevant characteristics of the technology, such as its perception as anthropomorphic or socially present, and the user, for example, the individual tendency to anthropomorphize or the individual need to belong, were focused. Moreover, a possible effect of social connectedness to the technology on the desire to socialize with other humans was explored. As findings showed that duration and intensity of participants&#039; interaction with the technology throughout the two-week study-period positively predicted felt social connectedness to the technology, similarities to dynamics of interpersonal relationship development were highlighted. Furthermore, the relevance of technology anthropomorphism in the development of a human-technology relationship as well as its comparability to dynamics of interpersonal relationships was underlined. Namely, the more intense individuals interacted with the technology, the more anthropomorphic they perceived it, and therefore felt more socially connected to it. Similarly, the longer and more intense individuals interacted with the technology, the more socially present they perceived it, and in turn felt more socially connected to it. While contrary to expectations, no interrelation between the felt social connectedness to the technology and the desire to socialize with other humans emerged, this relationship was explored further within studies 3.1, 3.2 and 4. Two consecutive experimental studies (study 3.1\/3.2) explored the potential of anthropomorphic technologies to fulfill social needs as well as how individually perceived anthropomorphism correlates to these needs. While in both studies social exclusion and technology anthropomorphism were manipulated, we applied a different manipulation of anthropomorphism for each study. Whereas in one study (study 3.1) participants answered anthropomorphic (vs. non-anthropomorphic) questions regarding their own smartphone, in the other study (study 3.2) they were confronted with smartphone designs with anthropomorphic (vs. non-anthropomorphic) design cues. In both studies, no effects of anthropomorphism and social exclusion on behavioral intention or willingness to socialize were found. Yet, study 3.1 showed a positive correlation between willingness to socialize and perceived technology anthropomorphism. Results of study 3.2 further supported this relationship and additionally showed that this relationship was particularly strong for individuals with a high tendency to anthropomorphize, when the technology came with anthropomorphic design cues regarding its appearance. Thus, findings imply a relationship between social needs and anthropomorphism and further hint at a relevance of individual and contextual strengthening factors. To complement these findings and foster a deeper understanding of the human-technology relationship as well as its potential to address users\u2019 social needs, a qualitative interview study was conducted (study 4). Findings highlight a potential of anthropomorphic technologies to address users\u2019 social needs in certain ways, but also underline essential differences between the quality of human-technology interaction and interpersonal interaction. Examples are the technology\u2019s missing reactions in interaction with the user on a content, physical, and emotional level as well as the absence of satisfaction of users\u2019 social needs through interaction with technology. Additionally, insights hint at a social desirability bias, as interaction with technology that resembles interpersonal interaction appears to often be subject to rather negative reactions by third parties. After an overview of the empirical studies included in this thesis and their brief summaries, their research contribution is discussed. This is followed by an elaboration of overall theoretical and practical implications of this thesis. Theoretical implications focus on how this work contributes to but also extends theoretical and empirical work in the frame of the \u201ccomputers are social actors\u201d paradigm and particularly highlights the role of technology anthropomorphism as a phenomenon in this regard. The devices are used in a broad range of application areas, particularly for training and educational purposes. Such applications leverage the advantage of the devices of being able to create ecologically valid environments allowing us to study human behavior in a controlled, safe, and realistic way. Furthermore, consumer users are increasingly adopting the devices, anticipating their potential to become an integral part of our everyday device repertoire.<\/p><p>However, current VR HMDs expose users to digital eye strain (DES) - a rapidly spreading health problem in today&#039;s digital society. DES collectively refers to eye and vision problems caused by prolonged exposure to digital screens. Its non-specific symptoms, such as dry eyes, eye ache, or blurred vision, affect the users&#039; overall quality of life and general well-being. While a large body of work exists on DES in conventional displays, the problem has only marginally been addressed in the context and development of VR HMDs - despite them carrying inherent properties that make them particularly prone (e.g., coverage of large parts of the field of view, close distance to the eyes). Besides such technical factors, the context of use inherently increases the problem, as the goal of VR experiences is usually to immerse the users in the virtual environment, which may lead to prolonged and extended exposures.<\/p><p>This dissertation lays the foundation for researching DES in VR HMDs by analyzing properties, causes, and solutions to the problem and setting it into context with other types of discomfort occurring in VR HMDs. To that end, it applies two complementary views allowing it to analyze the problem from a user-driven and a technology-driven perspective. The thesis is structured into four parts. First, it provides an analysis of the properties of the two views user and VR HMD, which are the main stakeholders in the interactive system of interest. It explores the interaction possibilities between the two using a morphological analysis, the results of which are presented as a two-dimensional design space. In a second step, the thesis presents a literature survey on the user-driven and technology-driven causes of DES that are currently present in the human-computer interaction literature. The survey results reveal a lack of user-driven solutions. Building on these results, in the third part, two solutions to alleviate DES symptoms are developed and empirically evaluated. One solution consists of short visual tasks that have to be performed actively by the users (user-driven eye exercises) and one that can passively be integrated into device use (technology-driven blue light filtering). The two solutions are evaluated in three quantitative user studies (N=28, N=24, and N=19), revealing that the user-driven solution (eye exercises) is successful in reducing symptoms, while the technology-driven solution (blue light filtering) did not have a reducing effect on symptoms. In the fourth and final part of the thesis, the problem of DES is set into perspective with two other important types of discomfort occurring in VR HMDs (simulator sickness and ergonomic symptoms). The relationship between the three symptom types and their individual contribution to general discomfort is formalized with an exploratory factor analysis. Then, the severity of the three symptom categories is compared in a user study (N=352), revealing that DES and ergonomic symptoms are more prevalent and severe than the currently dominantly researched problem of simulator sickness.<\/p><p>The dissertation concludes with a number of overreaching findings: (1) The interaction on VR HMDs carries unique properties that promote the occurrence of DES symptoms. (2) The search for causes has currently dominantly focused on technology-driven causes, and user-driven solutions are rare. (3) The problem of DES is prevalent and severe in the users of VR HMDs but is currently not sufficiently addressed neither by VR HMD experience developers nor by the research community. (4) Solutions should be designed in a way that they can be integrated into device use; one example for such a solution are short visual tasks can be employed to reduce symptoms. (5) There are external factors, such as users&#039; susceptibility or sex, that further drive the experience of DES symptoms. (6) In addition to these main insights into DES in VR HMDs, this dissertation provides an analysis of general discomfort, consisting of at least three main factors (DES, simulator sickness, and ergonomic symptoms) and provides an extended factor structure that can be used to build a more timely and comprehensive discomfort measure for VR HMDs. While these methods enable secure interactions, they remain vulnerable to impersonation attacks and behavioral drift and are influenced by dynamic environmental conditions. Addressing these challenges is essential to scaling biometric systems effectively across diverse devices, environments, and user scenarios.<\/p><p>This thesis investigates three core challenges hindering scalable biometric systems: (1) observation and impersonation attacks, including the impact of assistive visualization in mimicry; (2) the risks of deploying behavioral biometrics in uncontrolled public settings by understanding the influence of dynamic environmental factors on system performance; and (3) user understanding and perception of these systems, which affect their adoption and effectiveness.<\/p><p>To address these challenges, this work introduces two novel biometric identification methods that leverage emerging technologies. They do not require mental effort, cannot be stolen or forgotten, and can operate in the background with no active user engagement required. However, biometrics also come with drawbacks: their underlying machine learning models mostly act as black-boxes to users while at the same time being prone to systemic biases and inconsistent recognition performance. Furthermore, it is crucial to consider the context in which customized surfaces are utilized, as relocating them to fabrication labs may lead to the loss of their original design context. Additionally, prototyping high-resolution sensate surfaces presents challenges due to the complex signal processing requirements involved.
